Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is an underlying protocol which helps to protect communication between you and the site you are visiting. The padlock icon, that appears in a browser bar next to a URL and indicates a website is safe, represents a certificate based upon SSL. It is the technology used for keeping internet connections safe and protecting sensitive data.
