Lockdown has seen a huge demand by consumers wanting to buy a furry friend. Across the UK animal lovers have lost money after paying deposits for puppies and kittens that don’t exist. The scammer places an ad on pet-specific websites, general selling sites (such as eBay or Gumtree) or on social media, which states that the animal cannot be viewed because of social distancing but can be delivered.
The pet never materialises and in addition to deposits, further money may be scammed to cover supposed additional costs, such as transporting the animal or medical fees. Beware! These scams are frighteningly common.
