There are warnings over a new cold call scam that advises members of the public that the safety of their National Insurance number (NI) has been compromised. The automated phone message gives instructions to ‘press 1 on their handset to be connected to the caller’, in order to resolve the safety issue and receive a new National Insurance number. After following these steps the person is then persuaded by the fraudster to part with personal details in an attempt to carry out fraud. This is a scam and the HMRC will never phone, text or email in regard to your NI and ask for personal details.
