There has been a rise in recent weeks of SMS, email and phone scams posing as the HMRC and threatening court action and jail if overdue tax isn’t paid immediately. Incoming phone numbers are being cloned by fraudsters to appear genuine and can easily trick callers. Police are urging the public to be vigilant and be aware of bogus text messages, phone calls or emails from anyone posing as an official government body.
