Computer Software Fraud Call Scams

Police and Action Fraud have issued alerts about a cold call scam that allows criminals to log into personal devices remotely and steal money. This type of scam is common, however recent statistics show a huge spike in cases during the pandemic.

The scam involves the victim being called and alerted to an ‘issue’ possibly on their computer, bank account or internet/Wi-Fi. The caller needs to take action to fix the problem by accessing your computer. By following the fraudster’s instructions to download a remote access tool, they allow them to steal sensitive information such as account details or online banking logins.

Amazon, BT, Microsoft and banks are some of the companies that are being impersonated by criminals to gain trust and scam their victims.
